Stenprop is giving an additional £10,000 as a special Christmas donation to the Bokamoso Education Trust in South Africa. Stenprop chose the Bokamoso Education Trust for its annual charity of 2018.
The additional money will support Mandy Khumalo in her education during 2019, with any surplus being used to fund other children and to buy school uniforms and textbooks.
Mandy Khumalo is in grade 8 at Hyde Park High. She lost her mum three years ago and is one of three girls at home. Her dad, Tabson, works at Rivonia Veterinary Clinic during the day and as an Uber driver at night to make ends meet. This family is an example of a child-headed household where, when at home, the girls cook and clean and wash and iron their school uniforms. They share their flat in Hillbrow with three other families; the three Khumalo girls and their dad all share a bed. With the dad, and to the girl’s excitement, the Trust has recently enrolled two of the three Khumalo girls in a boarding school called Bishop Bavin. We are trying hard to get the other little girl on the Bokamoso Trust as well. The two Khumalo girls are thriving in boarding school, except for struggling to sleep in their own beds (as they have been used to co-sleeping their whole lives).
Mandy’s favourite subject at school is Africaans and her favourite sport is squash. When she grows up, she would like to be a pilot.
